| aardhaling | requisitioning of dirt for maintenance of of hydraulic works, usually the nearest suitable for the task, with owners compensated a standard amount. |

| keur (plural, keuren) | rule or bylaw. |
| kroosheemraden | lower- or village-level heemraden or trustees responsible for oversight of local hydraulic measures. |
| landscheiding | watershed boundary; an embankment separating one water board territory from another. |
| made madesgelijk | a variant of morgen morgensgelijk, which see; the made was land unit occasionally used for hay and/or pasture land. |
| morgen | the standard unit of land measurement used by Rijnland and surrounding water boards, equal to 0.85 hectares or 2.1 acres. |
| morgen morgensgelijk | an ancient principle that all land benefitting from a hydraulic measure must be assessed for its maintenance, apportioned per morgen regardless of the quality or location of the land. |
| morgengeld | a levy assessed per unit of land (morgen) by a water board to finance its activities. |
| panden | verb, to place a lien against land or other property as a means of securing payment. |
| rechtsdag | a court session, hearing. |
| scheiding | arbitration; arbitrated settlement. |
| schout (plural, schouten) | a village administrator appointed by the territorial prince or other overlord. |
| schouwen | verb, meaning to inspect, to hold to established standards. |
| schouwdag | an inspection hearing, usually on site. |
| uitleggen en inhalen | the process by which a dijkgraaf (or a schout, at the village level) would put up money (uitleggen) to pay for needed repairs or maintenace in cases where those responsible for the repairs have failed to do so, and subsequently the dijkgraaf (or schout) would recover his money (inhalen) by collecting twice the amount in money or four times the value in property from the delinquent parties. |

| waal (plural, walen) | from wiel (wheel), indicating a washout or deep gully caused by a dike breach. |
